A Week In The Cold (Part 1)

So as the whole world is aware the week of February 7th though the 13th was a long one. Now I will let you know that from living through it in Houston. I have learned a lot about myself and what I need to know going forward. There are so many things that I could have done differently and other that I should have definitely done differently.

This is not going to be a survival guide because I am not qualified to give that kind of information. I will also say that some of these steps are commen but if you don’t know about them you will now.

1. Secure all doors and windows. After things started to get better in the middle of the week we realized that. I should have taken old clothes for this. All doors and windows should have been covered. That way whatever heat is in the house or room will stay trapped. If my family would have done this the first night would have been a lot warmer. So please do make the same mistake.

2. Dressing in layers!! This is probably the simplest thing that I could have done. Doing this was the only thing  keeping  me warm. Thinking back to it this I was essentially the only thing I did right. Put more clothes on, check.

So this was just Sunday thought Wednesday it was crazy I was only having way into the week. I don’t know what the rest of the week was going to be like.

Now that I know all of this I am more prepared for the next situation. Everything and everyday is a chance to learn and be better. New challenges will come and go how we react to them will depend on the information that we have.

A Week In The Cold (Part 2)

Now during this time, I was scrambling all over the place. The power was off but we have water but I don’t know how I was going to make another night in the apartment because I was struggling to light a fire. The second night my family went by a friend who still had power and water. So I was the last one who was waiting for things to get back to normal. Tuesday night I met with my family and we all were back together where we were safe.

So going into Wednesday we had no power but fortunately, I keep in contact with one of our neighbors so when we find got the power back on it was safe to go back home. The best part about the whole thing was we had electricity in the house. And since we stayed with a friend I was able to take a bath and I was able to go to sleep not being cold. But the night in paradise was over and it was time to go back home.

When we made it to the house we there was electricity but now we had no water. So it was such a good thing that I already took a shower while we were away. Now we were in a bigger situation. With no water how are we going to cook, clean, bathe, and most importantly drink? We were a little prepared we had water for drinking but not much more. I got a large jug from work and a coworker gave us a few packs of water. All of which we were very grateful for.

Now that we had water we were able to relax a little. We started cooking again but we have to bake everything so that we would not dirty up extra dishes. The second half of the week was a little easier than the beginning but it was still filled with struggles. Trying to keep a baby and ourselves clean with no running water was difficult. Thank goodness for baby wipes or we would have not made it. Also thanks to all of our friends who were able to help us out. If it hadn’t been for a coworker we would have not been able to bathe. A few friends opened up their homes to us so that we had a place to clean ourselves and lay our heads.

The entire week was hard and we were lucky that it was not more difficult. We survived, we are stronger now and more prepared for the next disaster. Hopefully, it won’t be another one any time soon.
